“Explainer” and “demo” get used interchangeably, but they do different jobs. Picking the wrong one wastes budget and confuses your audience. Here is the simple difference.
The explainer video
An explainer answers “what is this and why should I care?” It is short, story-driven, and focused on the problem and the outcome. It is built for people who do not yet know your product. Best used on your homepage, in ads, and at the top of your funnel.
The product demo
A demo answers “how does it actually work?” It is more detailed, shows the real interface, and walks through features. It is built for people who are already interested and evaluating. Best used on product pages, in sales calls, and in onboarding.
A simple rule
Use an explainer to create interest. Use a demo to convert interest into a decision. Most growing SaaS companies eventually need both, the explainer to bring people in, the demo to close them.
Where companies go wrong
The most common mistake is leading with a demo to a cold audience. If someone does not yet understand the problem you solve, a feature walkthrough means nothing to them. Earn their attention with an explainer first.
